[ Something in her tone has changed, and it makes him pause. Since they had first woken up, in a shared bed surrounded by pictures of themselves they had never taken, she had been hostile at best. He had matched her vitriol and then some, but this is different. Her voice is calmer, if a bit forced, and she’s actually being reasonable.

He sighs, and then his shoulders slump, anger draining from his body and leaving behind a tired, homesick man. She is not a threat to him, he reminds himself. ]


In Russia, I would call you by your given name and your patronymic, since we are hardly close. But you don’t take your father’s name, do you? It’s just your given and family names for you Westerners. I could call you by your family name, yes, but they seem to have made you take mine for this farce of a marriage.

[ The Americans are horribly casual in regards to how they address each other, and that is why Raskolnikov hesitates to give away even his given name. He can all too easily imagine someone — even Beth — calling him Rodion, or even worse, by a diminutive! ]
