The latter is perhaps the more disturbing for Wrench. If there's a reason for all of this, he thinks the responsible parties would have an easier time if they'd just cop to it. If they're needed for something, then someone might as well tell them what it is. Hell, there might be some of them who would be willing to help out, no questions asked.

Of course, any time Wrench tries to make sense of what's going on, it's his partner's face that comes to mind. His partner who is very much alive here, who very much died ten years ago back home.
