For me it's easy. I'm only a few years off, so I largely just need to explain why I'm here in America.
For you...you're...mid-20s? [Possibly a bit older but he thinks it's probably more polite to estimate down than up when guessing a woman's age.]
So you would have been a child when the war broke out. Your father might have been drafted, oo, or better yet, signed up voluntarily. You can say that you and your mother wrote to your father every week while he was off fighting Nazis. That sort of thing would go over very well here, I think. Womenfolk on the homefront supporting their men, and all that. But you're also a go-getter, so after the war, when you were older, you attended a woman's college and got a degree in...whatever. You got a job, met your husband at work, fell madly in love, stopped working once you were married of course, and then you and your husband decided to move here because it seemed such a lovely town to raise children and you're hoping to be in the family way soon, God willing.
Alternatively, tell them you're a Canadian, you studied at Oxford, became an aviatrix, and you've spent the last few years travelling the world as an adventuress before settling in Sweetwater with your darling husband whom you rescued in the Australian outback.
