"I had a teacher who looked out for me, but that's not quite the same thing." As pathetic as Underwood had been, he'd still been better than any commoner family. If nothing else, he had been a stepping stone to greater things. He had seen the pictures, and they'd been nauseating enough that San's 'reveal' couldn't really make them worse. He doubts that he could actually play on any family connection - at least not with Sans, but there's a wider world out there. He hasn't gotten a chance to get a read on Papyrus, and he knows better to immediately throw away any possible advantage.
